The UPSC Civil Services Examination selects candidates for the IAS, IPS, IFS, and dozens of other central civil services. It's widely regarded as one of the toughest exams in the country — not because any single stage is impossible, but because it demands sustained depth across a huge syllabus over nearly a full year.

An attempt only counts if you actually appear for at least one paper in Prelims — applying but not showing up does not use up an attempt.

Selection Process

Prelims. Two objective papers — General Studies and CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test). CSAT is qualifying only; your General Studies score determines whether you advance. This stage is purely a screening filter and doesn't count toward final rank.

Mains. Nine descriptive papers, including an Essay, four General Studies papers, two optional subject papers, and two language-qualifying papers. This is where your actual rank is built.

Interview (Personality Test). A roughly 30-minute conversation assessing judgment, awareness, and personality — not just factual knowledge.

Final Merit & Service Allocation. Combined Mains + Interview score determines your rank, which in turn determines which service (IAS, IPS, IFS, etc.) and cadre you're allotted.

Eligibility & Attempts

• Must be an Indian citizen (for IAS, IPS, and IFS specifically)
• Bachelor's degree from a recognized university, in any discipline
• Final-year and final-attempt students can appear for Prelims, but must prove they've passed before the Mains application
• Medical students who've finished final-year MBBS (but not yet completed internship) are also eligible

What to Study

• General Studies — History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, Science & Technology
• Current Affairs — genuinely central to UPSC, far more than most other exams
• An optional subject of your choice, studied in real depth
• Essay writing and structured answer-writing practice
• CSAT — logical reasoning and basic comprehension (qualifying stage)

Our General Awareness and Government Schemes content is a solid starting foundation for the GS portion, though UPSC ultimately demands more depth than most other exams on this site currently cover.
