Sentence Improvement

Pick the version that reads better and is grammatically correct

Sentence improvement questions give you a sentence with an underlined part, and ask you to choose the best replacement from the options — sometimes the original is already correct. This tests both grammar and natural phrasing, not just rule-memorization.

What to Check, In Order

  • Does the underlined part have a grammar error (tense, agreement, preposition)?
  • Is it unnecessarily wordy or repetitive?
  • Does it use passive voice where active would be clearer?
  • Does the replacement change the original meaning? (If so, it's wrong, even if grammatically fine)

Worked Example

Original: "The reason he was late is because he missed the bus."
This is redundant — "the reason... is because" repeats the same idea twice. Better: "The reason he was late is that he missed the bus."
